    L'esperienza culinaria è stata la sorpresa più grande. Mi aspettavo pasti essenziali e di fortuna, ma il buffet offriva una varietà di piatti sorprendentemente ampia. Mi ha mostrato come un'eccellente sistemazione in quota protegga dai venti gelidi e dai disagi della cima, permettendo di godersi comodamente le spettacolari albe, i mari di nuvole e i tramonti del Huangshan senza alcuna difficoltà. La prossima volta che visiterò il Huangshan, questo sarà sicuramente il primo posto che prenoterò.

    Prima di arrivare a Huangshan, gli amici mi avevano ripetuto spesso che, se volevo godermi il paesaggio montano in tutta comodità, dovevo assolutamente soggiornare presso lo Huangshan Shilin Hotel, situato sulla vetta. Ho dedicato un'intera giornata a questa parte del viaggio, pernottando in quota per poter ammirare sia il tramonto che l'alba. Accompagnata dalla brezza che trasportava il profumo dei pini di Huangshan, l'esperienza è stata assolutamente perfetta.
    Sono arrivata con la funivia di Yungu poco dopo le 14:00 e ho percorso a piedi, in una ventina di minuti, la scalinata in pietra che conduce allo Shilin Hotel. Appena varcata la soglia, un membro dello staff si è fatto avanti per prendere i miei bastoncini da trekking e mi ha offerto con un sorriso una tazza di tè caldo allo zenzero, dicendo: "Qui tira vento, si scaldi un po' prima". Durante il check-in, mi hanno gentilmente informata che avrei potuto ammirare il tramonto dalla vicina piattaforma panoramica alle 17:30 e unirmi a un gruppo guidato diretto alla Terrazza Qingliang per l'alba, prevista per le 5:30 del mattino seguente. Mi hanno persino dato consigli sulle temperature in quota e sull'abbigliamento pesante necessario, risparmiandomi la fatica di dover cercare tutte queste informazioni autonomamente.
    Sono rimasta subito colpita non appena ho aperto la porta della mia camera: l'arredamento in legno naturale trasmetteva un senso di calore e accoglienza, ben lontano dall'atmosfera spartana che ci si potrebbe aspettare da un hotel in vetta. La finestra incorniciava perfettamente il paesaggio montano; aprendo le tende si scorgeva in lontananza la Vetta Shixin, con i rami dei pini che si protendevano verso il vetro, ondeggiando dolcemente nella brezza. Sebbene la camera non fosse enorme, ogni dettaglio rivelava grande cura: lo scaldaletto era stato acceso in anticipo, offrendo una piacevole sensazione di calore al tatto, mentre vicino alla finestra erano stati lasciati guanti da trekking e scaldamani in omaggio: un pensiero premuroso per evitare che le mani si congelassero durante l'osservazione dell'alba al mattino presto.
    Alle 17:00, seguendo le indicazioni dell'hotel, mi sono diretta alla vicina piattaforma panoramica della Vetta del Leone; non c'è stato bisogno di farsi largo tra la folla per trovare posto. Al calar del sole, un bagliore rosso-arancio ha avvolto gli inconfondibili pini e le formazioni rocciose, inondando l'intera Huangshan di una calda luce dorata. Mentre mi trovavo sulla terrazza panoramica, accarezzato dalla brezza montana, sentivo il respiro farsi più lento e il mio spirito trovare pace in quel momento. Al buffet dell'hotel, la varietà dei piatti ha superato di gran lunga le mie aspettative: un ricco assortimento di portate calde, zuppe di noodles e specialità locali della cultura Hui mi attendeva. Dopo un'intera giornata di escursioni, stringere tra le mani una ciotola fumante di pancetta di maiale brasata sembrava sciogliere ogni tensione muscolare.
    Alle 5:30 del mattino seguente, ho seguito il personale dell'hotel fino al punto migliore per ammirare l'alba — la Terrazza Qingliang — situato a soli dieci minuti di cammino; questo mi ha risparmiato la fatica di dover percorrere sentieri di montagna sconosciuti nell'oscurità. Mentre osservavo il sole emergere lentamente dal mare di nuvole e la luce dorata inondare le onde di nebbia, udivo i sospiri di meraviglia delle persone intorno a me. Avvolto in un pesante piumino fornito dall'hotel e con in mano una tazza di latte di soia caldo preso al ristorante, sentivo un calore confortante diffondersi fino alla punta delle dita. Dopo l'alba, sono rientrato in hotel giusto in tempo per gustare dei mini-wonton freschi preparati secondo la tradizione di Huangshan; l'aroma invitante si mescolava al vapore e quel primo boccone mi ha regalato quella sensazione di felicità profonda e appagante che si prova solo in vetta.
    Un tempo pensavo che soggiornare in un hotel in cima alla montagna fosse solo un compromesso necessario per vedere l'alba, ma la mia permanenza al Huangshan Shilin Hotel mi ha fatto capire che, al contrario, quel luogo ti protegge da tutte le difficoltà della vita in quota. Non c'era bisogno di trascinare attrezzature pesanti lungo i pendii o di cercare a tentoni il sentiero nel buio gelido; potevo invece godermi comodamente i tramonti, i mari di nuvole e le albe più spettacolari di Huangshan. Tornerò sicuramente qui la prossima volta che visiterò Huangshan.
